Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy preview: Capturing everything special about the much-loved series

Marvel's continued button into video games brings an imminent new entry. If you'd asked most fans, it'southward unlikely they'd take picked Guardians of the Galaxy equally the most likely to immortalized in a game. I know it caught me by surprise.

Information technology'south also non Square Enix'due south get-go foray into the Curiosity universe, either. Merely Guardians of the Galaxy is no mere Avengers spin-off. Information technology's fabricated by a completely unlike studio, for i, and focusing solely on a strong single-histrion experience. Only like Sony'south already pop (and bright) Spider-Man games.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy launches in Oct, but before that, I had the gamble to sit downward and spend a couple of hours playing the game for the first fourth dimension. And honestly, it surpassed what I'd hoped for. The preview of the game took place in chapter 5, somewhere in the heart, and where the showtime signs of the Universal Church of Truth appear.

A proper Guardians of the Galaxy experience

Making Marvel games is tough. The brand has such a storied history and such an enormous, knowledgeable global fanbase, that it's hard to go it right and really like shooting fish in a barrel to slip up. Earlier sitting down in front end of the new game, my biggest fright was that information technology would somehow miss the mark on feeling like a true Guardians of the Galaxy experience. It's a very different proffer to Avengers, for case, simply the good news is that they seem to have nailed it.

The music is 1 of the virtually important parts of making this a true Guardians of the Galaxy experience. Peter Quill's honey of 80s tunes is 1 of his cadre personality traits, and in Square Enix's take on the story, he takes the name Star-Lord from his favorite ring. They could accept left it at that place, simply instead, members of the audio team really formed the band and recorded an original album. Y'all tin listen to the first track, Space Riders With No Names, right now on all major streaming platforms. Not just is information technology an impressive accomplishment, simply the Star-Lord tracks sound really good.

The total reveal of the soundtrack is even so to come up, but besides what has already been made public, during my preview time I was treated to a piffling Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Billy Idol, and it's more than than just background music. During the huddle (more on that beneath), yous get a nail of very loud, very awesome music, and it'due south only incommunicable not to sit there and go your groove on. I actually hope nobody was watching when I couldn't help but break out into a fleck of Rick Astley'due south Never Gonna Give You Up.

Along with the music, though, is the team dynamic. The Guardians of the Galaxy are a loveable, if dysfunctional, family, with Quill at the lead, and the writing from what I've seen so far is superb, as is the voice interim. Though Rocket does maybe go a piffling overboard with using the word "flarking". The characters all have rich backstories which can be explored through exploration and conversation, and the squad dynamics actually feel on signal. The friction between Star-Lord and Rocket, arguing over "my ship", the manner Drax is very, very literal, the style that Groot is, well, Groot is Groot.

I could go along for hours, just the of import signal is that this game feels similar you're in a Guardians of the Galaxy universe. When information technology needs to be serious, it is, but it tin can also be airheaded and lite-hearted.

A fully single-player game

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is a single-histrion game in its truest sense. Despite having a team of five characters, there is no co-op, no online play, just you. It might sound disappointing to some that you tin but play as Star-Lord, and at first, that was the reaction I had. But it works. Peter Quill is the leader, he's the guy the rest of the team turns to (whether they like it or not) and his deportment, his decisions, are central to the game'southward progression.

The residual of the Guardians volition play as AI NPCs, in that they'll jump into battle and start slapping bad guys on their own, but you lot nevertheless take ultimate control. You accept the ability to direct individual characters to set on specific enemies, and at times there volition be special moves using bits of the environs you can trigger them to have on. Every graphic symbol has skill upgrades to earn throughout the game, and then even though you're not straight controlling them, their abilities can certainly brand the departure.

There's no open world here, which is fine, but there's even so plenty of scope to explore. The Milano, for example, isn't but your base of operations, it's packed with things you can nosy into. Each character has their own room, and inside there are items that can trigger conversations into everyone'south backstory. There's a jukebox where you lot tin can change the tunes, and even minor details like closing the refrigerator door someone left open, or the "Sarcasm for Dummies" book laying on Drax'due south bed.

In that location volition be collectibles to larn, too, and no uncertainty related achievements. I constitute one called a "common cold case file" on Groot, but the preview concluded before I could get back and discuss information technology with him. Even if the answer to everything would have been "I am Groot".

As with any Marvel game, in that location is also a heap of cosmetics to larn, but it looks like you'll find at least some of those out in the game'south various missions, too. I came across one for Drax by exploring a bathroom of all places.

Looks amazing on Serial X, challenging gameplay

My preview was on an Xbox Serial 10 and even this unfinished, early on version of the game looks incredible. It uses really vibrant colors, and the detail in both the characters and the world around them is something special. But it's not all bear witness and no get, either.

This is really a fairly challenging game to pick up. Sure, jumping into the middle of the game without a warm-up didn't help, but fifty-fifty on easier difficulties, you tin can get a decent claiming out of this.

Gainsay is a satisfying blend of melee, ranged, and tactics, with special moves to learn as you upgrade Star-Lord and mechanics to get your head effectually. Quill's elemental blaster will be a key component, but you're not going to shred enemies like they weren't at that place. Some of the mini-bosses I came up against had huge shields, lots of health, and could do more damage to you than yous could to them. You have to figure out how to break down their shields and pick the right time to unload a high-impairment attack.

Part of the tactics is also using the other Guardians to tip the balance in your favor. And when you lot accuse upwardly the necessary meter high plenty you lot'll get thrown into a huddle. This is exactly what it sounds like. The characters all come up together and you have a option of things to say equally Star-Lord. If you say the right matter, every member of the team will become a damage buff. If you don't, only Star-Lord does.

To really blast your performance you lot'll have to get to grips with all this as well as Star-Lords movement, and it will experience a little tricky at outset. But when you get the hang of it, it's actually satisfying. And it's not just combat, either, the short time I spent with the game besides showed off some puzzle elements, likewise, and of course, a fairly intriguing story. I don't know the beginning, or the end, but I did see the showtime glimpse of one of the game's villains, the Universal Church of Truth, and the storyline feels well written. Of course, terminal judgment on that will have to look.

Coming shortly

Fortunately, we won't have to await also long. Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is set to launch on Oct 26 on Xbox, PC, PlayStation, and even on the Nintendo Switch equally a deject version. This feels similar it's going to be a really strong, really entertaining, and exciting Marvel game.

Guardians of the Galaxy is as well a great choice to reach out to non-Marvel fans, as it's ane of the most accessible, fun franchises under the big red imprint. I was excited for this game before, but having played it now, launch day can't come soon enough. This could end upwardly being i of the best superhero games you can play.
